The Emptiness of Non-Political Being
Posted by: Fringe in Australia, Economy, Gold, Politics, Shares, Tech, Uranium
Countless times during our long and profitable investment career, our political judgment has been invaluable in helping us make accurate market predictions, enabling us to pick trends well before they are common knowledge and every man and his dog is on the gravy train. A current example is the certainty we had that the ALP conference would lift the no new mines ban yet not back nuclear power stations. We lined up our U investments accordingly, choosing only shares with interests in South Australia, the Northern Territory and overseas. Our knowledge of the loosening of political control in China and subsequent market relaxation encouraged us to lash out with our investment in OCO, now paying off. Likewise with that goldie of goldies, LRL and the enticing LYC.
Without a political perspective refined and polished in debate with others, one flies in a fog.
It is most frustrating that our favourite share forum is *still* not permitting political discussion. Others with a similar investment style are feeling the annoyance as well. Is HC only interested in servicing callow day junkies who have no use for or understanding of the benefits of a rounded political knowledge?
Tentatively, folks begin a discussion on Workchoices, which one would think would be of great interest and relevance to anyone with investments, which is prompted killed by the censors. A venue where one can’t discuss the meta influences on the stock market reminds one of the ghastly Christmas dinner debates in the bizarro world of relatives who couldn’t bear having their rightard rigidities challenged. Sharescene is worse though. Bland, bland and more bland. Others aren’t even worth mentioning.
We continue to post on stockfish.com.au, hoping sooner or later like minds will roll in and we will again be stimulated and nurtured by lively discussion.
Today INL broke out – beginning to fulfill the promise we noted last year when we first began accumulation – the orchestra of jibes which have caterwauled in dreary downramping for ages have finally fallen silent. One more piece of news and it might push toward 30c. BLR takes a breather and we are terribly tempted to buy more – SNU is still being driven down or capped and it is also attractive. Even more delectable is APG, more of which we will definitely snaffle should it fall more. At present though, we are cashing up both for a possible correction and the impending TRF Ironclad float which will be irresistible.
On the very political front, Bill Heffernan’s obscene, bellicose attack of Julia Gillard, slandering her as “deliberately barren” sends shudders down our spine – it is an attack on all women. Note that neither New Zealand PM Helen Clark nor Germany’s Angela Merkel have children.
Heffernan has a habit of garish perturbations – Michael Kirby was a previous target when Heffernan disgraced himself with the notorious Comcar forgery. At the time, Simon Crean said, “He’s demonstrated he’s got no integrity. He’s demonstrated himself a coward. He’s demonstrated he doesn’t deserve the opportunity to continue to sit in the Parliament and he should do the right thing and resign”. Then there was his unseemingly remark to Nationals Senator Fiona Nash to “blow it out your backside”. Then there was the Brogden affair where Heffernan earned the title of Howard’s right hand man.
Is Heffernan still doing Ratty’s dirty work? The rodent’s limp repudiation of Heffernan’s slashes at Gillard’s childlessness today was, as after his previous repulsive manouvres, less than convincing.
Heffernan is an even less fit person for public office now. What slimy secrets does he have which he may be projecting onto others he feels are vulnerable and who don’t measure up to his troglodyte standards? People who vilify other folks for their personal life choices quite often have something rather sordid to hide in their own miserable existences.
Gillard’s smooth off-handed rebuttal of Heffernan’s dirty remarks however have served to seal temporarily at least the cracks which had started to develop in the ALP industrial relations platform.

[...] Jeremy Sear and Tim Dunlop both know a fake apology when they hear one. Beyond the Fringe decides to take the piss, and her graphics ain’t too shabby [...]

I can only hope more people find Stockfish
I built it with the saying in mind – “if you build it, they will come”, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way.
It is sufferring from chicken and egg syndrome. People won’t post there until there is enough discussion to reply to, and there won’t be enough discussion to reply to until people post there. I guess when word gets out that it is fast, and ad free, then we might see some more posters.
HotCopper suffers from both under and over moderation. They delete a lot of worthwhile posts on things like politics, but then allow people to troll the hell out of other areas (CDU thread has been a good example). Of course seeing the conversation in-between all the huge ads is a bit of a job in itself.
The other major alternative, ShareScene, seems to be about as exciting as watching grass grow. I’ve found TopStocks has some good posts at times, but the horrible green colour scheme makes my eyes want to implode.
Regarding Workchoices, it is obvious the Liberals are running scared now. If it is such a good system, why suddenly add in the safe guards? couldn’t be anything to do with all those penalty rates and public holidays being snatched away?
Rudd must be rubbing his hands together with glee.

I think one just has to hang in, keep offering the goods and they *will* come.
The HC moderation is, I suspect, a result of different moderators possessing different world views – the inconsistency is marked. I had to laugh when my HC post about making it onto the clubtroppo radar with this Fringe post courtesy of the current Missing Link editor, Helen Darville/Demidenko/Dale was deleted for “flaming”.
I reckon a Miles Franklin, Vogel award winning author would appreciate the irony of such censorship.
ShareScene sometimes has useful info, yet I agree it is very dreary. I find TopStocks visually offensive. I like its share picking comps but don’t feel inclined to pay for the privilege considering the virulent green pervading the site, which hurts my eyes. Notwithstanding, at least they do permit political comments. Don’t like the fact that I can’t post an actual link to my blog in my sig or a pic.
With the WorkChoices #3, Howard is as you say, definitely manouvring – seeking to win back his toe hold amongst workers who would like to emulate the lifestyles of their bosses. Expect to see more carrots soon. Budget on Tuesday!
